3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga

Your journey begins early in the morning as you leave the historic city of Fes and head south through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a charming alpine-style town often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” known for its cleanliness, European-style houses, and beautiful public gardens. Continuing the drive, you’ll pass through the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to the playful Barbary macaque monkeys. In the afternoon, you can choose to relax or enjoy optional activities such as quad biking, sandboarding, or a 4x4 desert excursion to explore more remote dunes. Later, you’ll return to the camp or a local kasbah hotel to unwind and enjoy dinner. Watching the stars from the silence of the desert night is a peaceful and mesmerizing experience.

After breakfast and a final camel or 4x4 ride back to Merzouga village, you’ll begin the journey north toward Fes. The first stop is in Rissani, an ancient trading center and the birthplace of Morocco’s current royal dynasty. Stroll through its traditional market — one of the most authentic in the region — where locals trade livestock, dates, spices, and crafts. Continue to Erfoud, known for its fossils and marble workshops, where you can see how ancient marine fossils are transformed into beautiful decorative items.

The drive then takes you back through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains, with stops for lunch and panoramic views along the way. As you pass again through Midelt, Azrou, and Ifrane, the scenery shifts back from desert plains to green forests and rolling hills.
