Your adventure begins early in the morning as you leave the vibrant city of Marrakech behind and set out across the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), offering breathtaking panoramic views of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and small Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. Take a peaceful walk through the gorge, meet local artisans, or simply relax in one of the small cafés that line the river.

Continue your journey south toward the desert, passing through Tinjdad, Jorf, and Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and as the gateway to the Sahara. The landscape gradually changes from lush valleys to rocky plains, and finally to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. Upon arrival, your camel caravan awaits to take you deep into the desert.

As the sun begins to set, you’ll ride your camel across the soft sands, watching the colors of the desert shift from gold to crimson and finally to twilight blue. After breakfast at the camp, ride your camel (or take a 4x4) back to the village of Merzouga, where your driver awaits. You’ll then begin the drive westward, leaving the desert behind but carrying its spirit with you.

Your first stop will be Rissani, an ancient trading town that once served as the capital of the Alaouite dynasty and an important stop for caravans traveling between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa. Visit its traditional souk — one of the most authentic markets in the south — where locals trade spices, crafts, and livestock. Continue your journey through Alnif and Tazzarine, crossing rocky desert landscapes and small oasis villages until you reach the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest and most beautiful river oasis.

The valley stretches for more than 200 kilometers, lined with date palms, kasbahs, and small Berber villages. The road follows the river through the mountains, offering countless photo opportunities and glimpses of traditional life in southern Morocco. Then begin your return journey to Marrakech, retracing your route through the High Atlas Mountains.
